Tradescantia pallida (Purple heart).

Purple heart, known by its scientific name as Tradescantia pallida is popular among the Commelinaceae family (also referred to as the dayflower or spiderwort family) which are mainly characterized by their small flowers mainly composed of three petals sticking out of their long bowing leaves.

This beautiful plant is a popular choice for indoor gardens and is known for its purple and green leaves and long, trailing stems and is perfect for use as a ground cover.

Purple Heart plants are native to Mexico and are easy to care for, making them a great option for both experienced and new gardeners. With the right care, they can thrive indoors and add a touch of colour to any room.

Here are some tips for caring for your Purple Heart plant:

Light: Purple Heart plants prefer bright, indirect light. They can tolerate some direct sunlight, but too much can cause the leaves to turn yellow. If you don't have a spot with bright, indirect light, you can also use artificial light, such as a grow light. Alternatively, you can plant them in shaded areas such as places close verandas or under tress where they are known to thrive as well.

Water: Purple Heart plants prefer to be kept consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water your plant when the top inch of soil is dry. You can also use a moisture meter to check the moisture level of the soil.

Temperature: Purple Heart plants prefer to be kept in temperatures between15-30 degrees Celsius. Avoid placing your plant in a drafty area or near air conditioning or heating vents.

Humidity: Purple Heart plants prefer a moderate to high humidity level. You can increase humidity around your plant by misting it with water or placing a humidifier nearby.

Fertilizer: Purple Heart plants can benefit from regular fertilization. Use a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the growing season.

Pruning: Regular pruning is important to keep your Purple Heart plant healthy and full. Prune back the stems to promote bushier growth and pinch back the tips of the leaves to promote branching.

Repotting: Purple Heart plants prefer to be root bound, but if you notice that your plant is outgrowing its pot, you can repot it into a slightly larger pot.

Propagation: Purple Heart plants can be easily propagated by taking stem cuttings and rooting them in water or soil. Make sure to use 'rooting powder' to increase your luck and avoid wastage.

With proper care, your Purple Heart plant will thrive and continue to add color and beauty to your home and garden. Remember to always be mindful of the plant's needs and make adjustments as necessary.
